I see there is a cross that looks like a victorian cross. Then there is a crucifiction cross with a sircle over it. I often wonder why people choose all these different symbols and what they mean.

Hiya Hun

Well the "Cross" means "Emblem of faith" could well also mean that this person was in a war etc !

Have just posted another thread explaining what the symbols are lov !

And will get a better definition of them all as well baby  Kiss

(This is a nice and unusually long etching on a gravestone ?)

In a Disused Graveyard
by Robert Frost

The living come with grassy tread
To read the gravestones on the hill;
The graveyard draws the living still,
But never anymore the dead.
The verses in it say and say:
“The ones who living come today
To read the stones and go away
Tomorrow dead will come to stay.”
So sure of death the marbles rhyme,
Yet can’t help marking all the time
How no one dead will seem to come.
What is it men are shrinking from?
It would be easy to be clever
And tell the stones: Men hate to die
And have stopped dying now forever.
I think they would believe the lie.

Gravestones, grave markers tombstones, headstones, memorial tablets and plaques - they all come under the heading of monumental inscriptions. All are tangible evidence of our ancestors. Some bear no more than a name and the date of death. Others have more to offer. Date of birth is frequent as is relationship to another person, such as wife of, relict or widow of, or son/daughter of. Often, as several people are buried in the same grave, there will be a whole string of connected people listed, some with different surnames, so you can work out quite a good family tree from the information. The actual house or farm where they lived may be inscribed or the military rank they held or their occupation. All extra pieces to fill in the often blank picture of our ancestors.

People of importance and wealth are often commemorated inside the church and in fact many were actually buried inside the church in tombs or vaults and in the crypt (known as the crowde). Stones set in the floor have been worn by centuries of feet passing over them and may therefore be much less legible than those on the walls. The inscriptions on old tombs in the graveyard have suffered far worse in many cases. The weather has affected even Victorian gravestones, especially those made of the local stone where the entire front may have crumbled and sheared away, leaving no trace of what was carved there. So much depends on the prevailing wind or how sheltered they are.

It may not be only the weather which has erased any evidence. There are stones covered with ivy or entangled among brambles or tree roots. There have been graveyard clearances, where any stone which is not maintained has been removed. As a church became redundant and used for another purpose there might even have been wholesale removal. However, this practice has been generally superseded more recently by the rearrangement of all stones round the perimeter, so at least they remain on the spot, if not in situ. Unfortunately many people could not afford any kind of marker, so the only evidence that they lived and died is to be found in parish records.
