Alnwick Castle a film location, for everything from Harry Potter to Elizabeth to Becket to Blackadder, Castle Introduction The history of Alnwick Castle goes back to the late 11th century, just after the Norman Conquest. Defending the English border with Scotland was its primary purpose and it was besieged in 1172 and 1174 the then King of Scotland. In 1309 it was purchased by the 1st Baron Percy and has been the family home of the Duke of Northumberland ever since (almost 700 years)
Castle Architectural Features Considered by many to be one of the finest castles in England and set in grounds designed by Capability Brown, Alnwick Castle was originally built as a Norman fortress and then later (circa 1760) was transformed into a family home for the Duke of Northumberland. The castle consists of two rings of buildings - an inner ring at the centre of a large bailey and an outer ring with medieval towers along the outer bailey's walls - and a 14th century dungeon.
Castle Built: 11th century onwards Castle Period: 14th century Nearest Main Town: Alnwick, Northumberland
Creature from the Tomb The vampire that once frequented this castle, a one time lord of the estate, lived underneath it and would emerge at night to attack the local villagers. An outbreak of plague was also attributed to the unholy creature, and this resulted in the villagers digging the monster up from its shallow grave and burning it. ive been there before a couple of times and not felt any senses of anything, maybe this year just maybe.................
