I find nothing turns people back to faith like a good mystery.
Unless it leaves a smoke trail and then lights it up? I wonder what the wind was doing that day? Such remarkable smooth displays can only happen when there is no wind. Also there must have been a sound if it was a rocket.
When I was 17 in the military I once almost took me and my mates heads off when I lit up the drive load (engine) of a thousand foot flare without its body and payload. It also left a remakable smoke trail that hung around as good evidence of my mischef.
Thank heavens everyone was sleeping because it passed about one foot above their heads. If one lifted their head they would have been a gonner.
