Scientific research on the Maharishi effect.

Effects on City Life
Using Box-Jenkins time series impact assessment analysis of predicted threshold, scientists in 1984 found a 22% reduction in homicide when the group of Yogic Flyers exceeded the predicted threshold. Researchers in 1987 used Box-Jenkins time series impact assessment analysis of a 5-month intervention period compared to pre- and post-intervention baselines, and found that when the creating coherence group (Yogic Flyers) surpassed the square root of one per cent of the population of Metro Manila in the Philippines, there was a significant (p < .005) decrease in crime.

Effects on State and Provincial Life
Another researcher found in 1990 that a significant decline in crime rate, traffic fatality rate, and unemployment (also combined in an index) in the state of Iowa, USA, as a result of the coherence creating group at Maharishi International University (p’s < .05 for each variable). This researcher employed Box-Jenkins time series transfer function analysis of the effect of group size on quality of life.

Effects on National Life
A number of studies have demonstrated significant effects on the quality of life in an entire nation from a coherence creating group. These include decreased crime and accident rates in Holland during three intervention periods (all p’s < .025); increase in the British stock market index (1983); using Box-Jenkins time series impact assessment analysis, researchers in the U.S.A. found a decrease (p = .005) in traffic fatalities when a coherence creating group in Iowa exceeded the square root of one per cent of the nation’s population (1984).

Effects on Neighboring Countries
Employing Box-Jenkins time series impact assessment analysis of the effect of the TM-Sidhi group, a researcher found that the influence of a creating coherence group in the United States not only reduced Okun’s Misery Index (the sum of monthly inflation and unemployment rates) in the United States, but also in its neighboring country Canada. However, he noted that the effect was larger in the United States than in Canada, underscoring the need for every nation to maintain its own group.

Other researchers found that as the size of a creating coherence group increased in Jerusalem, it began to first influence the city, then the nation of Israel, and then its neighboring country Lebanon. This study measured a composite index including war intensity and war deaths in Lebanon, Israeli national mood and national stock index, auto accident rates, number of fires, and crime rates for both Jerusalem and Israeli; it employed Box-Jenkins time series analysis using impact assessment, cross correlation, and transfer function analyses of the creating coherence group size on all variables and indices.

Effects on International Conflict and Quality of Life
Studies have found that the Maharishi Effect creates a profound effect on International conflicts. A study of U.S. relations with the former Soviet Union between 1985 and 1987 found that when the size of the coherence-creating group at Maharishi International University exceeded the square root of one per cent of the U.S. population, there was in the following weeks a significant improvement in the actions of the United States toward the U.S.S.R.; in addition, studies have found decreased conflict in troubled areas of the world, and decreased war deaths and injuries and significant progress toward peace in Lebanon.

The Global Maharishi Effect
One of the most significant areas of research on the Maharishi Effect is the effect of a creating-coherence group of Yogic Flyers on the entire world. In December of 1983, Maharishi International University hosted a three-week assembly for participants in Maharishi’s TM-Sidhi programme. Participants attended from all parts of the world, creating the first group in excess of 7,000 (the square root of one per cent of the world’s population). Using a variety of statistical techniques appropriate to the different data sets (including chi-square contingency table analysis and Box-Jenkins time series impact assessment analysis), researchers found a number of positive changes in the quality of life throughout the world, including increased positivity in trouble-spot areas (p < .002), increased progress towards peace in Lebanon (p < .006), and increase in the World Index of stock prices (p < .00004).

These studies clearly indicate the powerful influence available through the collective practice of Maharishi’s TM and TM-Sidhi Programme. With the creation of groups in all the nation’s of the world, there will be a phase transition of world consciousness leading to Heaven on Earth for all mankind. In this way, Heaven on Earth is being created through the complete scientific knowledge of Natural Law that is now available to everyone through the programmes of Maharishi's Vedic Science and Technology.

The most powerful way to create invincibility is through groups of Yogic Flyers, for it is through the group practice of Maharishi’s TM-Sidhi Programme, including Yogic Flying, that the quality of a nation’s collective consciousness can be most effectively improved. By creating enough groups throughout the world, every nation can enjoy invincibility, and the entire world will enjoy Heaven on Earth—life filled with happiness and success, free of problems and suffering, where every individual spontaneously lives in accord with Natural Law.

I dont know of people who use the MO this person in your post speaks of. But then I am not a current TM guy either. I learned it as a child and it was presented to me as a meditation technique. We did not go on courses and follow ups we were simply taught how to meditate with the TM technique.

I did some more digging and came up with this.

http://www.youtube.com/v/VFfQuCGU0ZQ&rel=0&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1

http://www.alltm.org/yogic-flying.php

What is Yogic Flying?
Yogic Flying is a natural extension of the Transcendental Meditation program, and accelerates the benefits of meditation. It is a specific and unique meditation procedure practiced after one has learned how to meditate with the Transcendental Meditation technique. Hundreds of research studies have been performed on the TM-Sidhi's and Yogic Flying.

During TM the mind and body settle down and experience a state of restful alertness, the unified field of Natural Law. "Yogic Flying" cultures the ability to think and act in a settled level of awareness and gain mastery of Natural Law. I would describe my experience during Yogic Flying as one of "bubbling bliss."

"Yogic Flying" is learned as a part of the TM-Sidhi program. Over 100,000 people have learned Yogic Flying, and like Transcendental Meditation its benefits are practical, holistic, and scientifically validated. For instance, EEG studies show that during Yogic Flying, at the moment when the body lifts up, coherence is maximum in brain wave activity.

When "Yogic Flying" is practiced in groups, this influence spreads throughout the environment, reducing negative tendencies and promoting positive, harmonious trends throughout society. These results are easily reproducible and have been extensively validated through rigorous, peer-review published, scientific research.

The physical manifestations of the "Yogic Flying" vary with the practitioner. The Yoga Sutras of Maharishi Patanjali describes three stages of immediately visible results. Stage One is generally associated with what would best be described as "hopping like a frog." Stage Two is flying through the air for a short time. Stage Three is complete mastery of the sky. The above photo and all "Yogic Flying" demonstrations to date depict Stage One results.

No one can predict when or if "Yogic Flyers" will ever get beyond this Stage One physical manifestation. It really does not matter as the effect on society from group practice has been shown to happen as long as this meditation procedure is practiced effectively. It behooves any lover of life or believer in science to through investigate the effects of this technique and implement these proven techniques for bring peace

Permanent Peace Through Maharishi's Proven Technologies of Peace - Modern science and timeless wisdom have come together in a practical, powerful technology of peace. Groups of peace-creating experts can dramatically reduce violent crime, terrorism, and war. This site documents a large body of evidence from 50 demonstration projects and 23 published scientific studies—accepted and published by mainstream scientific journals—on proven peace creating technologies.

Achieving World Peace and National Invincibility - According to recent research, traditional approaches to defense fail because they do not address the underlying cause of violence and conflict: they do not relieve the acute political, ethnic, and religious tensions that fuel terrorism and conflict. During the last 25 years, a powerful, innovative approach to peace has been extensively field tested—in the Middle East and throughout the world. The consistent result has been dramatic reductions in terrorism, war, and other social violence.

These findings have been replicated, published in leading academic journals, and endorsed by hundreds of independent scientists and scholars. The efficacy of this approach is now beyond question. These studies verify that the scientific knowledge and technologies are now available to end terrorism and conflict, to achieve indomitable national strength and security, and to create permanent world peace.

This is a short discription from a teacher who used to teach TM
Quote

FALLING DOWN THE TM RABBIT HOLE
(how TM really works on a critical opinion)

In a single phrase, TM is just trance combined with suggestion.  You are told that your mental activity will become reduced and that you will experience deep relaxation.  Then the TM teacher induces a trance in you, in which you merely act out those suggestions.  The TM teacher also teaches you how to induce trance in yourself and thus attain trance-induced relaxation on your own.  It's nothing that a nightclub hypnotist or a medical therapeutic hypnotist couldn't accomplish (don't fall for TM research claims to the contrary), although the TM trance induction scripts in fact prove to be very powerful at inducing trance in some people.

How does TM work?  Well, it depends on who you ask of course, but I will be offering one theory for your consideration.  First, I will offer the "short version" of the theory.  I will then follow up with a longer explanation.

In short, the theory that I present asserts that the basic meditation course is a 6-session trance induction exercise combined with many implanted suggestions.  TM "works" only if you are susceptible to the particular method of trance induction used by the TM teacher, and if you are also amenable to the suggestions that he will offer to you that are to be enacted in trance.  Additionally, if you are one of the people who are also still susceptible to suggestion immediately after a trance, you may also fall vulnerable to TM spiritual indoctrination and to recruitment into advanced TM practices.

You are first required to attend two "introductory lectures."  These lectures serve to implant two important suggestions in the mind of the student:

The first suggestion that is implanted is: "my TM teacher is an authority figure".  This is very important if the TM teacher is to plant further suggestions and induce trance in you.
The second suggestion that is implanted is this: "TM will reduce my mental activity, resulting in deep relaxation."  This is important because otherwise you wouldn't know what was expected of you upon entering trance.
Then a few days later you have your "personal instruction" in TM.  This involves a trance inducing ceremony (called "the puja" by TM teachers), which is followed immediately by the trance inducing and suggestion-rich "imparting of the mantra procedure."  Together these constitute a powerful "trance induction script" called "The Steps of Initiation" which the teacher has carefully memorized over a period of months while being trained as a TM teacher.

The precise memorization of the various trance induction scripts used in "teaching TM" is in fact the major task involved in becoming a TM teacher.  (The deliberately mysterious process of "learning how to select a mantra that is life-supporting for each individual" literally takes about 60 seconds.)

Once in trance, the student in fact acts out the suggestion that his mental activity should become reduced and that he should become relaxed. Again, this is nothing that a nightclub hypnotist or a medical therapeutic hypnotist could not accomplish if they found a trance induction method that proved effective on you.

Another effect of the "Steps of Initiation" trance induction script is to teach the student how to place himself in a trance at home, without the aid of the teacher, via the mantra.  The same suggestions are still in effect, i.e. that mental activity should be reduced and that the student should become deeply relaxed when in trance.

At each of the three subsequent group meetings another trance induction script, called the "group checking procedure", is used to place the students again in trance.  Indoctrination in TM religious dogma immediately follows. This indoctrination always occurs immediately after the students come out of trance, when some of the students in the group are still in a highly suggestible state with critical reasoning facilities seriously impaired.

At the last of these meetings, the teacher then plants a new suggestion.  This suggestion is that the students can eliminate literally all personal suffering by merely practicing TM for "twenty minutes twice a day."  This sets the student up for what I call the "fall down the TM rabbit hole", in which they are subsequently led to believe that they need ever more TM courses, products, and services.

Please note that I do not mean to imply that TM teachers know that they are using trance induction and suggestion on you.  They have already fallen far down the rabbit hole themselves. They actually do believe that they are teaching you a newly revived but truly ancient Hindu spiritual technique.  They believe Mahesh.  They do everything the way they do it because they have been told by Mahesh exactly how to do it, and have been told never to deviate from their instructions.  They almost certainly believe everything they have been telling you, with perhaps some mental reservations.  Remember, these techniques were used on them before they learned how to use them on you.

Mahesh's instruction to the TM teachers to never deviate from procedure is rigid enough that the "Steps of Initiation" trance induction script is memorized and said to you by rote.  So is the "group checking procedure" trance induction script which was used on you at the three group meetings.  So is the "individual checking procedure" trance induction script that is used if you come back any time after the three days of instruction to have your meditation "checked."

Yogic flying has to do with levitation too. When you have filled yourself with so much light you become lighter. Ultimately you will levitate. A a lot of instances of spontaneous levitations happened through the years with people who do TM.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tW6pVFOpE6Q&feature=related

Here is an African Shaman who does levitation. He is clearly not doing it through TM. With TM it is effortless.

Scientific experiments with people who practice Transcendental Meditation indicate that it tends to produce normalization in all areas of life. It reduces stress, improves health, enriches mental functioning, enhances personal relationships, and increases job productivity and job satisfaction.

Why learn what is supposed to be a natural phenomenon?

Maharishi: Through instruction. What happens is that the mind, in its active state, learns to experience its own less active states, experience its progressively minimized active states, until eventually it cognizes the transcendental state of consciousness.

But in learning to do this, we must remember that the mind has usually been allowed to wander around so long in the realm of knowledge or power or the pursuit of happiness that it must be taught how to know itself again. That's why teaching becomes necessary. After learning Transcendental Meditation one knows what the natural state is. But to realize this, one has to be liberated from unnatural programs, performances and experiences.

Most people have no experience with Transcendental Consciousness, pure consciousness, the pure nature of the mind. They are aware of active mind, which is the waking state of consciousness. They are also aware of the complete forgetfulness of the mind, the sleep state. And they are aware of the middle stage, the dreaming mind. But they are not aware of pure or Transcendental Consciousness. So the experience of that consciousness is taught in Transcendental Meditation, though it's nothing other than the very nature of the mind.

Everyone knows sleeping is very natural. No one has to work hard to sleep. So resting is a natural process. One rests, one feels better, one feels relaxed. ‘Work hard’ is a wrong principle. Instead, one should draw the mind inward, pull the arrow back and release. This is the way to fulfill our desires. The desiring mind should be pulled back to a state of silence, and there, in that Transcendental Consciousness, the desire will get fulfilled. It is a great science of life, which does not require hard work. Enjoy and fulfill your desires.

What makes Transcendental meditation different from other meditations?

Maharishi: The basic difference is that Transcendental Meditation, in addition to its simplicity, concerns itself only with the mind. Other systems often involve some additional aspects with which the mind is associated, such as breathing or physical exercises. They can be a little complicated because they deal with so many things. But with Transcendental Meditation there is no possibility of any interference. So we say this is the all-simple program, enabling the conscious mind to fathom the whole range of its existence.

Transcendental Meditation ranges from active mind-or performing mind-to quiet mind-or resting mind. In this resting mind, one has purity and simplicity, uninvolved with anything other than the mind, uninvolved with any other practice. In Transcendental Meditation, because we deal only with the mind, we nourish all expressions of intelligence. The mind meditates, gains Transcendental Consciousness and brings about transformation in different fields of manifestation. All fields of life, which are the expression of intelligence, are nourished or transformed and made better through experiencing Transcendental Consciousness.

The mind, of course, is always concerned with other aspects, such as the physiology of the body, the environment, and the whole universe for that matter. But since Transcendental Meditation deals only with the performance of the mind, from its active states to its settled state, it remains unconcerned with those other aspects, though it deals with them all, because intelligence deals with them all.

The achievements of Maharishi
Mahesh Yogi are profound in the
field of knowledge and immense in
the field of action. During the past
50 years, more than five million
people have learned the
Transcendental Meditation
technique and are rising to
enlightenment through their
twice-daily practice. Maharishi has
trained over 40,000 teachers,
opened thousands of teaching
centers, and founded hundreds of
schools, colleges and universities.
Maharishi Vedic Science programs
are being applied in private
businesses, public institutions and
homes in every country.

What is Transcendental meditation?

Maharishi: Transcendental Meditation is a simple, natural program for the mind, a spontaneous, effortless march of the mind to its own unbounded essence. Through Transcendental Meditation, the mind unfolds its potential for unlimited awareness, transcendental awareness, Unity Consciousness — a lively field of all potential, where every possibility is naturally available to the conscious mind. The conscious mind becomes aware of its own unbounded dignity, its unbounded essence, its infinite potential.

Transcendental Meditation provides a way for the conscious mind to fathom the whole range of its existence — active and silent, point and infinity. It is not a set of beliefs, a philosophy, a lifestyle, or a religion. It's an experience, a mental technique one practices every day for fifteen or twenty minutes.

It has been years since I did a TM course. I did a few in the late 70's early 80's when I was still a boy so I dont know how the methods have changed. But basically TM is a technique that enables you to "fall through" to the unified vield of conciousness.

I recently met some very light people. Light in energy and vibration. They are inspiring the world to do TM in order to change the world for the better.

I saw a video where it was presented and proven that Maharishi prevented WW III from happeing in Germany by opening a workshop there and teaching people to do Yogic Flying. The teory is that having a group of YF's together heightens the vibrations to such a degree that the energy would not allow war to happen.

In this case they had three metres of snow and the sea froze up so no submarines could reach the coast to attack and eventually the soldiers spent their energy in helping citizens that was trapped in the snow instead of killing their brothers in arms.

Anyhow I will see if I can find stuff on the net and Ill post it here.
